Health care has always been a data intensive industry. However, much of the patient care record has remained on paper, limiting the exchange of information between health care organizations. That is all set to change. The billions of incentive dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are seeding unprecedented levels of automation and are contributing to exponential growth of available health care data. As a result, the need to translate discrete and disparate data into actionable insight has become more important than ever. The stakes in health care could not be higher as the system is beset with tremendous challenges to reduce costs and improve quality, all the while managing a demographic expansion and clinician shortages.

And that is only the beginning of the story. One must also consider that in the span of five years,from 2009 to 2014, the U.S. health care system will have experienced a massive infusion of funding and regulation related to health information technology; legislative health reform (The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act); the conversion to the HIPAA 5010 standard; the migration from ICD-9 to ICD-10; the launch of accountable care organizations; and the initiation of health
information exchanges. The onrush of changes is admittedly breathtaking, and the pace promises to remain daunting. Scarce and finite resources require prioritization.
